Scandinavian Concept of Hygge

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. As a cultural category with its sets of associated practices hygge has more or less the same meanings in Danish and Norwegian. The emphasis on hygge as a core part of Danish culture is a recent phenomenon, dating to the late 20th century.

Hygge also means finding joy in the simple things in life—enjoying a cup of tea in the afternoon, reading a book by a roaring fire, or spending time with close friends. Instead of looking at the mundane aspects of daily life as something to simply get through, Danes turn them into something to enjoy, recognizing that even the smallest moments in a day can have a big impact on how we feel. For example, you might create hygge by adding a woven blanket on your couch, candles on the windowsills or an uber-soft linen duvet cover on your bed.

Hygge decor is inviting and cozy, revolving around creating an atmosphere in your own home that encourages togetherness and appreciating the good things in life. Hygge design trends, marked by comforting neutral colors and natural materials, are a signature mark of the Danish lifestyle.

Using of soft textiles, neutral color schemes, mood lighting and comforting scents will bring hygge atmosphere in your home.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old.

Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

Advancing to the 1960s, Lorem Ipsum was made popular by typeface manufacturer Letraset, who used it in their advertising campaigns. Letraset offered pages of Lorem Ipsum as rub down transfer sheets, which were widely used in the pre-computer era for layouts. These transfer pages, known as Letraset Body Type, were featured in the company’s advertising and their popular catalogue.

Lorem Ipsum was reintroduced in the 1980s by the Aldus Corporation, a company that developed Desktop Publishing Software. Their most well known product PageMaker came with pre-installed graphics and word-processing templates containing a version of the faux latin language.

Sources of Inspiration

Where can you find creative inspiration?
Sometimes we find it in the works of our favorite artists, but this is not enough. Copying helps you hone your technique, but it may not be enough to find your style.

I propose to slightly reduce the degree of seriousness and seek help from the most inspired creators – children. Try to look for interesting textures in nature and recreate them using whatever materials you have, either artistic or not. Don’t be afraid to play. Mix techniques and materials, try new things and most importantly, enjoy the process.

Carefully consider the results and mark for yourself those techniques that seem close to you and that you would like to use in your work. It can be a source of inspiration and will help when you feel stuck.
